My '88 745 GLE was having similar symptoms. I tried the fuel pump relay, the noise suppresion relay, and a whole bunch of cussing. Nothing worked, and, as you describe, it is hard to get a handle on the problem because it is so infrequent. Finally, after months, the culprit ended up being a bad distributor. Not cheap, but now the car is good as ever (at 227k).
