What is the intended driving method for Overdrive/should I use it? 700

Hi all!

I have a 740 GLE b230f with overdrive. Since I have just repaired the OD relay and ventilated the casing, I wanted to get a little background on exactly what overdrive is. I do not have the owner's manual and this is the first car I've owned with a driver-controlled overdrive.

My questions are:

What driving situation(s) is/are appropriate for using overdrive?

Should I use overdrive regularly from startup?

How should I be driving when engaging and disengageing overdrive?

Most importantly, should I be using overdrive at all? Does it wear out the transmission quickly/frequently lead to problems?

I just noticed this week that I am getting a leak of clear fluid from the front of the engine. Could this be overdrive related? The fluid is clear and a rather oily.

Thanks in advance for any clarifications.
