Driving automatic 88' 745 in the snow, tire ? as well 700

I have yet to see a winter in my 88' 745 turbo. It is automatic and i'm a bit worried about how it will do in the snow. I live in Vancouver, B.C. and there are alot of steep hills around on my way to and from work (about 80km round trip). It does not snow alot around here, but when it does I want to be prepared. How well will this car do in the snow? Should I put sand bags over the wheels in the back? How much weight? Even with snow tires, will it be okay? What size of winter tires should I get? 195/60/15 or something? Thanks for helping the Volvo newbie ;)
