Warning light fixed! 200 1984

After tracing the wiring diagram I concluded that the brushes/voltage reg was forked...bought a new one, installed it AND...no change. Put the multimeter to it and the was a constant voltage drop while running of .3 volts. Installed a new alternator and voila! 13.42 volts and warning lights went out. Was this a coincidence or will getting the alternator wet fry something. I have washed many a grubby engine, but never had this problem. Anyone?
