Main Fuel Pump problem solved! 700

'87 740GLE B230F Wagon

Howdy! Thanks to all who helped in the past with my alleged problem.

I wanted to take a moment to share my stupidity with everybody in case this might help someone else.

After replacing the main pump, I could not start the car, no matter what (except when using starting fluid). I took the fuel line off the fuel rail and only had a small trickle of fuel come out. I checked everything I had worked on. I tore down to the fuel tank access panel and started opening up the system. After jumpering the fuel pump relay, I could hear the pre-pump running. So, I put back what I had taken apart and checked the fuel line at the rail again. At this point I no longer saw any fuel coming through. This seemed curious. Then, I placed my thumb over the fuel line for a few seconds and released and there was a light puff of air.

This made me realize that there must be a break in the line somewhere before the main fuel pump. I got under the back-end and discovered that the metal send line to the main fuel pump had become disconnected from the send hose coming out of the tank. Judging from the crud around it, I don't think it was ever put on properly, although I most likely agitated it while changing the main pump and filter.

One note, if this happens to you, when reattaching the hose, be careful not to catch the inner wall of the hose on the send line when pushing it back on. This was nearly impossible for me to see and took me a long time to figure out why I couldn't get it back on (even though I can barely get an arm up to this point from below.

After this, I had my wife hold a cup to catch fuel from the line and jumpered the relay. Fuel came out like crazy! Put it all back and the car started fine.

I hope this helps somebody else.
