Running slow at lower RPMs from cold start 700

'87 740GLE B230F Wagon w/Automatic 257,000mi

Hi all!

My car runs particularly poor for the first 5 minutes of driving (stop -n- go driving). The car takes forever to increase rpms. If I floor it, it won't make any difference in acceleration. Sometimes, it will audibly pop and decelerate (is that called detonation?), at which point I back off the pedal and resume on my merry way.

Once the car warms up, it acts better; although it never seems to get going very well until at least 2400~2600 rpm. This could be life threatening around the Detroit Metro area as driving away from a green light this slow is grounds for justifiable homicide from my fellow motorists;)

Any ideas what could be dragging me down? Maybe a bad knock sensor? Does the knock sensor function at lower RPMs, higher, or all?

Thanks!
