Alt light on - with ignition OFF! 1800

Most alternators have an isolation diode. The SEV/Motorola alternators
that are OEM on a lot of Volvos have an external one that is fairly easy
to replace. When it shorts it gives the symptom you describe and runs the
battery down. Its function is to let DC out of the alternator but not back
in. Remember that the output from the alternator goes straight into the
battery with no other switch.
