Confused with all the different models

There are many others on this forum more qualified than me to answer your questions, but I'll let you know what I know.

It seems like the rear-wheel drive Volvos are overall more reliable than the FWD models. I base this on the feedback I've heard here and on Consumer Reports, which used to recommend Volvos but hasn't lately because of reliability problems. I've heard of more problems from the newer models as opposed to the older FWD cars such as the 850 before it was named the 70 series.

As for the 900 and 700 series (again, based on feedback I've heard here), be cautious with the 6-cylinder engines. They seem more troublesome than the 4-cylinders. A friend of mine has a 940 and is quite satisfied with it (I just wish he would wax the thing - the paint is flaking off).

Either way, all Volvos are pretty much the safest cars on the road.
