240 volvo wagon - air conditioner

I was under the hood of my 240 volvo wagon and realized that there were belts missing on a couple of pulleys ...I'm assuming it's the air conditioning unit ...the pulleys would control a unit that's located on the drivers side of the engine ....Would this put a lot of strain on the engine if i decided to reconnect the air ? is there another alternative ?

also does the gear shifter on my automatic light up ? is there a bulb under the shifter ?
