Larger Speakers in 740 700 1991

Folks
I'm ready to swap a cd player and some speakers from my Jetta to my 91, 740

The speakers in the doors don't seem to have much bass response in comparison to a pair of 6x9s I have on the hat shelf in the jetta.

Unfortunately the shelf ihn the 940 is pretty narrow and I don't think the 6x9s will fit there.

What speakers do you use and how is the bass response?

I'm going to swap my CD player /FM from the Jetta first to see if the Audiovox unit is any better than the Sony XR-C7200 that came with the car first, then think about speakers.

Any tips hints?
