16V Head on 8V Engine? 700

I've still got my original 86 740 GLE non turbo engine in very good shape with 140k miles on it. The distributor problem looks like a plan stopper on this one since the 16V, I guess, has the distributor on the block vs back of the head like my 86. Maybe it would work better on my 94 945. It has the distributor on the block but is too nice to mess with at this point.
