Oil leaking from filler cap 700 1988

I hope someone can help me.My 740 2litre (B200E) engine has started leaking oil from the filler cap.According to the AA breakdown guy that came out to look at it(he stayed all of 5 mins) the engine is "breathing heavy and on its last legs".I just don't believe this as i have serviced her every 4000 miles and always used fully synthetic oil.The engine has clocked up 188,000 miles and still starts first time, every time.IT passed its MOT no problems in January and the emissions check was within acceptable levels. Is it possible that the breakdown guy is wrong?.I really don't want to sell her if it's something i can easily fix.

Many thanks,

Gary
