access to relays on '89 245 200

i love my little brick wagon, but goodness! what do you have to do to get to the relays behind the dash? (doors/windows/etc relays) i have the metal behind the console loose, and i can see the wires coming out the bottoms of the relays, and with the glove box out i can see across to the tops of the relays. right now i'm just trying to tie in a keyless entry, but if one of these relays ever fail what do you do? i don't even have enough room now to splice into the wire harnesses (console metal front is backed off but not completely removed). i think i'll just pull the engine and come in from the other side!

what's the "right" way and are there any shortcuts?
