How to test drive/check a 95' 940 wagon?

For $6300, I would disregard accident history unless it has left the car somehow destroyed. As I always say, if you want a car that's never been hit, buy a new car. I'm sure "it's never been in an accident". They all say that (and trust me, if the job is good enough that the mechanic doesn't mention it, it probably is good enough not to worry about). Very likely to have had work if the car lived in a big metro area. And unless it's a very tacky piece, the price is quite good. A car like that here would pull $10k from the right buyer. And I have seen them as high as $15000, but of course that would be a strictly perfect example that was TRULY never hit, scratched, or even looked at wrong.

I had my eye on a 1992 940GL, teal. Only 75k or something like that. It was smashed in the front but it was an easy fix I was going to snap it up once it got set up. Unfortunately the shop I worked for wholesaled it to another shop and it is now up for $8900. And that is an ex-salvage title too. Not cheap, but it is still a lot more car than anything else you could buy for less than $10k, and that has the features.

Now compare that to a 95 940 wagon for $6300. As much as I think Carfax is a big advertising gimmick, they do have a somewhat reliable mileage check service. The mileage seems low, but there are those people who never go anywhere. THis might be one of those cars.

I have a lot of 700/900 wrench time. They are almost mechanically identical. The 700/900 FAQ has a LOT of pertinent information. Common weak spots (sometimes because of age rather than anything) are radius rod bushings, engine (and trans) mount, and front brake slide seizure (extremely common). Sometimes the rear transmission seal leaks but that is typically later in the car's life. I just did a set of struts and shocks and alignment, etc. on my dad's 175k 940 and it drives like a new car. As much power as any 940 I've ever driven including my own or other customer cars. The car is really meant for a long life, but if a lot of little details are left unchecked, it can be an expensive proposition.
