Distributor dissasembly to get to Hall Effect- 88 240 200 1988

I'm trying to get to the Hall Effect to test or replace. I've got the distributor cap, rotor, and plastic peice off, but am unsure what to do next. This distributor does not appear to have the holes with screws on the side of the body that the Haynes manual shows. The identification on the side of the distributor looks like the letter H with a circle around it followed by the numbers 0237520004 and below that the numbers 050 circled followed by JH4. The shaft that the rotor goes on goes down to a small ring that does not appear to be movable. Around that is a larger ring with a slight amount of space between it. For oher distributors in the Haynes manual they are showing a special tool called a snap ring removal tool. Do I have to have this? Also, What is the easiest way to test the Hall Effect? Haynes manual instructions don't make sense to me.
