Spring compressor needed to change rear shocks 200 1982

I am going to finish off the rear end overhaul by replacing the Front trailing arm bushings and the shocks. I figured the best way to do this was to remove the trailing arm and R and R the bushing with a press. Do I need to compress the rear spring befor I begin disassembly or can I just control its extension with the weight of the car and a bottle jack. Is this safe??

Thanks
Matt
