Diesel vs Gasoline Tanks

Got a small problem here, my diesel fuel tank under the car has been punched open big time and Im now driving on a Johnson outboard 10 gal tank in the trunk! Has anyone ever compared the diesel tank to the gasoline tank? I actually have 2 tanks in the car, one under and one in the trunk under the carpet and they are tied together with a large rubber hose "T" and some other connections. This was specific to the diesel cars, why Im not clear on. Anyone know if I can sub in the gasoline tank and loose that trunk tank? Ive never had an issue with it in the past so never gave it a thought but now its a pain stopping to check the outboard tank!
The OEM tank is not repairable due to the large rip from some renegade roadkill that I happened to hit just right. Someone lost a leaf spring half and I ran the thing over, being curved it sprung up after my front wheel cleared it and POW! cut a 8" long by 2" wide rip in the tank. 16 gallons of #2H left me in a real hurry!

Thanks guys!
