1989 240 - noisy fuel pump or dud AMM? 200

After solving a few problems along the way I now have to make a decision before spending some cash.

The engine will start but stalls instantly.

When the AMM is unplugged the engine will idle ok but the fuel pump is making a loud sucking noise as if it is having a struggle. By the smell and the black plugs (new) it seems to be getting plenty of fuel.

Question - if the pre-pump is not working or the fuel pump is on its way out, could this cause the engine not to start until the AMM is disconnected. Also in reverse, if the AMM is bad could this cause the fuel pump to make a loud sucking noise?

Any advice would be most welcome as this could turn out to be expensive.

If it is likely to be the main fuel pump does anyone have any tips for the best way to replace it.

Michael
