Intermittent acceleration problem w/warm engine - '86 740 700

Thanks for clicking here. I'm vexed by a problem with our 740. After 15 minutes of city driving, it has a problem that when you are starting from a stop, the engine hesitates like it is gasping for air. It happens at almost the moment you push in the accelerator (it does not rev some and then hesitate, it starts by hesitating). At first it happens only when the clutch is engaged, but it gradually gets worse to the point where even if you try and rev in neutral it will hesitate and gasp, and eventually the car is undriveable.
What I've done - recently replaced the engine wiring harness due to wire insulation fatigue. This problem preceded that repair but has been gradually getting worse with time. I've tested the coolant temp sensor, it tests okay at cool engine temps. Tested the throttle position switch, works fine, even after warming it up in the oven some to simulate warm operating conditions. Did the resistance test on the air mass meter, got 3.4 ohms, while the manual says 3.7 ohms, I don't know if this difference is significant. And yes, I've replaced the distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires.
Any advice one could offer would be appreciated. We're almost 40 miles away from the nearest Volvo specialist and I'd really like to take care of this on my own if possible. Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
