M47 Reverse gear doesn't sync 200 1989

I replaced the M47 5-speed transmission in my 240DL with one from a salvage yard. It came from a 1990 with 100K miles on it. When I put it in the car, it seemed to run fine. However, when the car is in neutral with the engine running, it appears that the reverse gear is spinning. When I depress the clutch and try to go into reverse, the gear is spinning so I cannot mesh. If I go into another gear first and then go quickly into reverse, no problem. Does it sound like I have a defective transmission that needs to go back to the salvage yard? Are there synchronizers for reverse gears that might be defective on this transmission?
