Thanks. It doesn't matter how long I wait with the clutch depressed, the reverse gear does not stop spinning. If I force the shifter, I can get it into gear. I have another problem that may be related. Several responders to my querry have all said that something is causing the input shaft to drag, either the pilot bearing or the clutch. Sometimes it is difficult to get the transmission into the other gears , especially 1st and 2nd gears. It doesn't happen all the time. Before I replaced the transmission, it was easy to slip into any of the gears.
When I replaced the transmission, I flushed it with mineral spirits. I referred to the service manual that called for Type F or G ATF fluid. This surprised me, so I asked the transmission shop that I took the original transmission to for service; they said some transmissions use ATF fluid, but most use 90W oil. He suggested I use a 50/50 mix of ATF and 90W. Another mechanic said the same thing. I called two dealers and they both said to use the Type F or G ATF. So, I got 2 quarts of Type F ATF and since the capacity of the transmission is 1.6 quarts, I used 0.4 qts to flush the transmission again after I cleaned it with mineral spirits. So, the answer your question: "What kind of oil am I using in the transmission?" is Type F ATF, 1.6 quarts.
