84 740- swap turbo diesel to ?

I`m writing on behalf of a friend who has an 84 740 turbo diesel. He`s just found out from his mechanic that the diesel is "toast" & he doesn`t have that kind of $ for a rebuild(nor is the car worth it!) The car is reasonable shape & he would like to know if there is a non-Volvo engine that he could put in this car. I mentioned the 5.0 Mustang engine for the 240 but don`t know if that fits in a 740. Will this work? BTW, this 740 is an automatic.
