TSP as Rad kleaner? 200 1983

Bonjour,

Am about to install new water pump on 245 that still has original (it's copper/brass at least) radiator.

Last week had amazing success with Trisodiumphosphate from hware store in cleaning rust/scale deposits out of coolant overflow bottle in a '91 Toyota whose system hadn't been flushed in ages.

In that case deposits were so krusty I used repeated double strength solutions of TSP (its ph is 13 I understand) heated to boiling temp.

By the time you could see daylight through the bottle, plastic had softened in areas or most contact.

The stuff really brightens aluminum and stainless steel kookware. Is a good metal cleaner.

My questions: Should I use the TSP as a general flush in cooling system or just in radiator which is tired and "junk" anyway? Thermostat is 1 yr old and a good temp, 87 C, would like to leave it in place as previous one had mated in nasty way to aluminum head. What would TSP do to that part?

Curiously,
Frank in OH
