Sloppy steering - causes?? 200 1990

I really enjoy my 240. Starts first time, every time. Engine and drivtrain run like new even with 206K.

However, probably my greatest source of frustration with this car is its shitty steering. In the 2 years I have owned it, I have replaced the rack, tie rods, ball joints and this week the lower steering shaft U-joint - still loose....in fact it is looser now than before I changed all those parts. I have driven other 240's with tighter steering feel. Don't know what the problem is.

If this helps, I've had a banging/clunking when going over rough roads emanating from the driver's side for about a year now. Maybe struts??? Think they could be original. Have new sway bar bushings - will replace those in the next few weeks.

Can anybody help???

TIA,
Jim 90 244DL 206K
