How to tell if EVAP. has been changed. 700 1989

This is my latest dilemma (among others) with my trusty Volvo. When I bought the car the a/c was not working correctly, worked just did not cold as cold as it should. Since I have my EPA license I bought a can of R-12 and charged it up but it still did not work right but much better than it did. This lead me to belive there is air in the system. Over the past few weeks the a/c performance has been dropping off and I know now that it is again low. I have heard about the evap. on these cars being an issue, how can I tell if it has been changed already? The foam insulation where the pipes come out of the cabin and into the engine bay is all messed so that leads me to believe that somethings has been done to it before. I am planning converting it over to r-134a in the next month or so but don't want to do it and not replace the evap. if it is indeed leaking. Anyone know the easiest way to leak check it? I have seen w website before about changing it out anyone know where I might find it again?
