'85 245 GLTi Running Smooth!!! Long Summary 200

So for anyone who has been following my saga or providing me with information here is how the story ends.

In my previous post I mention that I crossed the yellow and white wire in my harness and the car started but my temperature gauge was through the roof. Well those wires had nothing to do with getting the car to run but they certainly had something to do with sending my temp gauge through the roof. The coincidental incident that caused my vehicle to start was my buddy who was helping me with the car this morning. While I was under the intake manifold trying to switch the wires between this previously unknown male spade connector and the temperature gauge sender, he was on the passenger side of the car leaning in the engine compartment with his belly up against the fender, one hand filled with a hot cup of coffee resting ever so gently against the cam cover and the other hand pressing up against the fire wall, with a burning cigarette precisely placed between his index finger and his F.U finger. His hand happened to be pressing on the wiring harness that goes to the ICU through the fire wall. This 230 pound diagnositc tool happened to place his hand up against the harness with enough force to allow transmission through the slightly disconnected wires to the ICU. Many people who have been helping me said repeatedly, "are you sure it's not your wire connections", I said "no I'm sure, I have checked them 3 times now"......"Ooooh those wires!!!" ;)I replaced the assembly for those wires at the beginning of the job and never re-checked them because I assumed that since I put new connectors on them that they would be fine..Silly me. The reason the car was running like it was suffocating this morning; the wires that were the worst in that connection (not at all connected) were the wires to the air control valve. Funny thing about all this is my 230 pound diagnostic tool works for a wire company and he said "you shouldn't use those sh*tty connectors from Crappy Tire, I'll get you some of ours on Monday". I declined by saying "I can't wait, I have to get this car running this weekend" (two weeks ago).

Anyways, I reconnected the wires with new insulated spade clips from ECS Wire at a cost of a cup of coffee and the car idles beautifully. As for the mistery white wire and the yellow wire. I had them in the right spot in the first place. When I took my 230 pound diagnostic tool for lunch at Subway to get a low fat sub, I took along my shinny new Bentley manual and found out that the yellow wire does in fact go to the temperature sender and the white wire goes to the thermal cut-out switch which is part of the lambda-sond system specifically only for the B21FT-Turbo engine. That's why I didn't find anything in the Haynes manual about this. ;)
When the engine heats up it sends a ground signal to the ECU to tell it to no longer run the vehicle in an open loop system. (Probably another reason the car was running choked and rich this morning when the wires were crossed) The reason the gauge was through the roof....If you want to test to see if your gauge works, ground the yellow wire and if the gauge works the needle will go to the top of its scale....Lambda-sond ground signal + gauge test method = needle through roof.
So the car idles beautifully and all I have to do now is fix a blown temperature gauge, replace all the panelling that I removed and thank the people of the Brickboard.

This list and the people on it saved me a whole lot of money and I would really like to thank you all, and from this experience I will definitely be contributing to the list in a financial manner. Also Randy, Paul, John, Danny and Dave, if you happen to be in the Langely area of British Columbia any time, give me a ring, I owe you a couple of good-ol' Canadian beers!

My lessons learned and suggestions to others;
-Buy a Bentley manual
-Check your wiring, even if you think you're a smart guy and did it right.
-Ask as many questions as possible and give all the details you can, the Brickboard people are willing to help.
-If someone tells you to check something or it would be a good idea to buy the proper manual or tool, don't be a cheap-ass, it may cost $100.00CDN (that's like $4.00 US) but it will save you a ton in the end, and if you're on this list you obviously want to maintain your Brick because you love it. And don't forget to check you're wiring.

Thanks Guys I really appreciate all the help.

Randy
