BTDT with my '89 760 turbo. There is a plastic connector that is about $5 from the dealer, which mounts onto the rim of the distributor and anchors the hall sensor wiring. While I suppose a really nimble fingered person could replace the sensor with the dist on the car, there are two reasons I'd recommend pulling the distributor.

1. The sensor mounting arrangement isn't that obvious and removing the dist gives you the opportunity to figure it out while sitting comfortably at the bench.

2. Removing the dist is not very complicated on the '89 230FT engine. The offset cam drive allows the dist to be reinserted only one way. Mark the base and the engine with a marker and you're there.

3. (I know, I can't count.) A common leak is the dist o-ring and this gives you a chance to replace it.

So get the connector from the dealer, pull the dist and replace it, then be careful whenever you chage the dist cap from now on so you don't accidentally break the connector off again.
