Brake pedal sensors. One of mine broke. 900

I was driving today, and felt something hit the top of my foot. After getting home and taking a look there was a black, round plastic piece in my floorboard. I have pin pointed it to the bottom sensor on the brake pedal (spring loaded). What does this sensor do? When I put it back in the hodler, it pops out whenever I press the brake pedal. Can I drive without this sensor for the time being? I believe the upper of the two sensors is the brake light sensor (the lights function normally) Please help. Thanks
