Kick down cable too short!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I bought my 86 740 it would shift into 3rd and fourth at about 3200 rpm
the guy who sold it to me said the transmission shop told him it had a clog somewhere and they would have to take it apart and find out what was wrong.
So much for honesty in auto repair. I soon discovered about the kickdown cable and as per the excellent FAQ on this site proceeded to try for an adjustment. To my suprise I found that it was adjusted as forward as it could go. I needed about a quarter of an inch to make the adjusment right. I wound up taking off the back nut and running the cable forward through the eye of the bracket past the threads onto the metal crimp on the end of the cable and used a hose clamp and the front nut to hold everything tightly in place. Now it shifts soooooo smooth it is almost seemless!!! What a nice shifting tranny!! I have to figure that a new tranny was installled and they put in a cable that was too short. Is there anything else that could cause this? Maybe at the other end?
