16 valve for the long term? 700

My father has a 1990 740 wagon with the 16-valve engine. It was acquired used a few years ago, and has had a number of maintenance issues. My father doesn't like the engine as well as the engine in his 1992 940.

Is the 16-valve 4-cylinder engine known for problems? Can it last a long time without major investments? This one has 115,000 miles on it.

I have a 1987 240 DL wagon with 135,000 miles and it has various problems and I want to get rid of it. It has the non-turbo 4-cylinder engine which seems good, aside from some oil leaks. Is there any advantage to putting the 87 245 engine into the 20 740?

Probably a dumb question, but I wanted to ask anyway.
