Popping in my HEAD! 200

Hello all,

I have noticed something lately that has me worried. When I shut my car down
I get a loud pop about every 5 minutes while the car is cooling down, I would assume this is do to contractions of the aluminum head. The noise seems to be getting louder and more frequent. Is this normal, the car is a 84 B23 196,000. I'm wondering if the head is loosening up? In an effort to head off trouble I,m planning to pop the valve cover and torque down the head and the cam bearing caps to spec. When I do this is there any danger in loosening the bolts a 1/4 to 1/2 turn, then torque them in sequence? Has anyone else had these noises?

Thanks,
