'88 740 Turbo, How bad is a coolant leak at the head gasket?

I have been looking at buying a truly beautiful 1988 740 Turbo Wagon. It is immaculate and just about everything that would need to be done by the 125000 mile mark has already been done. Over all, it appears to Problem is that it has a coolant leak at the head gasket.

The mechanic I had checking it out felt that this was a big problem (atleast not one that should be let go) and should drop the price of the car a grand or so to cover the cost of repair. His reasoning was that depending on how long the leak was let go and how it started, there could be corrosion of the head and or block - big $$$ to fix.

Has anyone had experience with this situation? I am sure I could do the head gasket myself and save on mechanic labor, but if there is real risk of head or block damage, I don't want to get stuck with a $3000 parts car.
