740 Tic burns oil on cold start only 700 1987

On cold starts, my 740 Tic will lay down a smoke screen for about 5 - 10 seconds, anywhere within the first mile of driving (can be before I even leave the driveway, or a mile down the road). After it has had its blue-white puff, I will see no other smoke for the rest of the trip, not under high vacume conditions (which I would expect if the guides were gone) or under load (as I would expect if the rings were gone), just the one puff at the start.
Is it possible that a little puddle of oil builds up somewhere while the car is not being driven, which is then burnt on startup? If so, why and where?
This is my first turbo car, so I fear it may have something to do with that.

.....or do I just have Smurfs crawling up my tailpipe when it's cold ;o)

TIA
