growling/howling from rear end in the cold weather. 200

Hey all!
Had a funny noise coming from the rear end this morning. When the motor is in gear and gliding (braking off the motor's compression) i get a howling growling noise from my differential or wheel bearings. I t only happens for a few minutes but sounds aweful. Once there is some heat generated it runs fine. Any experience with this sort of noise? How much time does my rear end have? THe car has 160,000 mi or so and i think the previous owner towed with it. John p
