1200 rpm rattle? 900 1993

My '93 945T makes a metallic-sounding rattle at 1200 rpm - in forward gears, reverse, and neutral. Rattle subsides once the engine has warmed up.
From reading the archives, I suspected the exhaust heat shields... checked 'em today and they seem firmly attached.
I did discover that the bracket that connects the downpipe to the transmission was not attached - just hanging loose on the pipe (had tranny replaced a couple months ago... mechanic must have forgotten to bolt it on...) Pulled the bracket off, but still have the rattle.
Could the lack of support for the downpipe be causing the rattle? or could there be another culprit?

thanks, Brian
