Clutch in= engine out. 700 1989

OK, I've got a problem that started about a month ago, and now it's happening intermittently, but with increasing frequency. I've got a NA 740 with a 5 speed. I'll be coming off the highway (or otherwise slowing down after driving at normal speeds, a stoplight or something); when I push the clutch in to downshift, the car will occasionally stall. This is disconcerting to say the least. The car always starts right back up, but the idle is always flaky (on the low side.) My first instinct was a fuel issue of some kind, but a fellow 740 owner thinks it might be ignition-related. Any clues as to where I can start looking? As you can tell, I'm not the most mechanically experienced owner out there, but I figure this'll get my feet wet so I can tackle more of my own repairs.

Thanks for the help.
