Costco Tire Service

This is a testimonial to a very pleasant experience at Costco. I have been getting tires since almost the Model T and I have never seen nor experienced this kind of expert, professional service. If anyone on the Board tries them, I hope they get the same great service. Sorry for being so wordy.

Earlier, I took both my wife's Merc and the 945 in for tires, Michelin MV4V and MV4X+ tires. Good tires, good price plus $50 off for a set of 4 which runs around springtime. Today, both cars went in for their (past due) scheduled balance and rotation, the cost of which was paid at installation. I gave them my torque wrench to use on the 945, set at 65 ft-lbs, and there was no problem. "But we use a hand torque wrench" they said. I saw them use their hand torque wrench, really! I asked them how they tighten the lugs. "Star pattern of course" they said. I was impressed.

I said that there was a slow leak in the right front tire. I was thinking that it could be one of four things, porous alloy, bead leak, the stem, or a puncture. I could not find a puncture. I can normally sniff them out like a hound dog. They did have bead sealer on hand if needed. "We'll check it out", they said. They found a finishing nail deep in the tread near the sidewall and they said it might be too risky to patch because of the flexing at that location. So I asked, "Ok, how much for a new tire?" on the so-called road hazard warranty. Their road hazard is part of the installation costs and covers user's hazards, not just manufacture's defects. They checked the wear. The tire had 15,000 miles on them. I was mentally chopping my fingernails like typewriter. "$1.70 for a new tire", they said. I kept a straight face and didn't do a happy dance until I was out of their site. I won't have to mention that I was impressed again. Btw, after the tires are torqued, another person doubles checks all the torques and signs off as a QC check.

Oh yeah, while there, I managed to catch some of the NC State-UNC football game on a display TV while munching some of their great food samplings.
