Another transmission swap question 700

I have a 1985 740 GLE Wagon that I've dropped a 1990 230 non-turbo engine into. My ZF auto finally gave up the ghost and I'm looking to do a swap to another tranny. I think I understand the shifter, drive shaft, cross member support, and O/D relay differences but my problem happens when I call the area bone yards to locate a AW71L tranny (which seems to be the unit of choice). I keep getting the question "What year tranny do you need". Stating an "AW71L" hasn't gone over very well at all but one place.

Is there a year and model series that only used the AW71L?

Would I be better off going to an M46?

Thanks.

PS - I'm a former VW fan but working this car has been a dream.
