power to manual steering--big job? 200 1983

Morning,

Recent trip through appalachia reminds me of the fact that I grew up with cars in the old days (the 70s!) w/o power steering. Had two 142s, a 72 and a 74, neither had ps. The 72 had an enormous 120 type wheel that helped in parking the beast.

The 245 I drive is in lovely shape, 15 yrs at least in CA on nice roads. The ps works fine but I really don't care for the loose GM feel at highway speed.

With the inattentive drivers on the roads these days, I really think it's safer to have a more direct feel in the steering for those emergency moments that WILL arise. Not to mention avoidance of our fellow creatures crossing the roads....

Anyone done a conversion of this sort on a 240? The A/C compressor would get chucked as well, unnecessary in my climate.

What was last year for manual steering here in N. America? Would stuff from a 700 series go in there?

Keep rolling,
Frank
