Front end rebuild 200

I have a scary "rattle" over bumps/road imperfections. I have a dealer service history from a one owner '89 240. This history does not include any suspension work so I'm planning to rebuild/replace everything in the front (including brakes. I cannot afford at this time to do everything at once. I want to know if it's possible to do the struts/lower ball joint first, then do the control arm and tie rod ends. I'm a tech and will be doing the work myself. This is my first Volvo, it's got 213k miles but is in great shape and worth putting money into it. I'm open to suggestions on all counts as I don't have much experience with Volvo's (did repair my overdrive dilemma w/out manual though!)
