SU rebuild problem... 444-544

I finally got around to rebuilding the dual SUs (HS6) I picked up for my 544. I removed the Weber Kit and wanted to go back to the SUs. Anyway, there seems to be a problem with the front carb...the piston sticks. If I put the dashpot on I can't get it to lift easily, just about have to pry it up. The rear carb seems fine. I have interchanged 2 other pistons into the carb and still the sticking problem. It unsticks and moves freely if I open the throttle. Any ideas on this? I do have a set of HS4 SUs...but I do a fair amount of HWY driving and thought the HS6s would handle it better (mileage & power). Am I wrong in this assumption?
