70 144s alternator light on very weakly 140-160

My 70 144s alternator light is on but very weakly, you can almost not see it during the day. But at night it's visable.I replaced all the Battery cables and it seemed to help. The charging system is charging now at 13.5 to 14.5 and seems to be running OK. I'm going to be swopping out the old charging system for a GM late model alternator as soon as I have the $. But I would still like to know why it's doing this.
