Distrubutor Housing Cracked when installing. What did I do wrong?

I changed my cam this week, and all went pretty smoothly until the last step; installing the distributor. To make along story short, I cracked it. I will go a get a used one tommorow, but do not want to make the same mistake, so I have a few questions. 1) How far should the distibutor slide in without effort? I noticed one that it got caught up on something before the large o-ring even entered the head. It was so far out that I do not think the cogs (part that fits into cam) had even reached the camshaft yet. I will also note that it was a real pain to remove the distibutor from the head when disassembling. 2) How can I make sure that the cogs are aligned with the slots in the cam? If there is anything else that I should know before tomorrow, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
