What is wrong with my power steering? 900

My 1993 940 was parked for four hours. It started normally and drove fine. A moment later, I made a U-turn to swing around I noticed that the steering assist was nearly absent. Yet, when I gave the car more gas there was plenty of assist and it felt fine. I got out to check the car for a flat tire (it happens you know) and everything was fine. I checked the belt tension and fluid level and it looks fine. I drove twenty miles to get home and everything is normal now. I am about to change the belts as a matter of regular preventative maintenance and I am hoping it solves the problem. Is there trouble brewing? Is my pump failing? My brick has 165,000 miles and there are no rack leaks to speak of.
