Heater Hoses 200 1983

Regarding the by-the-foot hose - I used this when I replaced my hoses not too long ago. You'll need to put some thought / effort into getting them on to the firewall connector without a kink, but it can be done (the volvo hoses have a molded bend I assume).
There are also a few sharp edges on the rear of the head/valve cover in that area so I sliced the old hoses open along their length and used them as chafe protection on the new hoses (with zip ties to hold in place.)

I second the already mentioned disclaimer about a leaking heater core. If the connections are open now I think I would fill the core with plain water and wait several days before re-routing the coolant - definitely not an ideal test because you won't be able to pressurize it, but if a big leak shows up, you can reconsider the change, rather than undoing the change.
