early steering rods 140-160

My 68 142 is showing some wear in one of the steering rods. I am told the early ones are not readily availible at this time. I have used up all the inventory I have of the early right side and was thinking of trying to just upgrade this side at this time. I know the long term solution is to change everything over to the new style but given that I still have components for some parts of the system to use up I thought about other alternatives. I wondered about a tapered reamer to fit the shank of the late model steering rods. Anyone done this?
