Gears are abnormally hard to shift into 700

Well heres the thing, my first car is a '86 volvo 740 turbo wagon. It was not respected in the least bit by it's previous owners. There were all sorts of problems when I brought her home(but hey, a volvo 740 turbo with a manual tranny and it's overdrive is still working for $1000, how can you go wrong?) I had horrible oil leaks in all my seals.(Got those taken car of thanks to my local Volvo dealership) And took care of the warn down clutch which I did myself. Now heres the interesting thing. Second gear is incredibly hard to shift into, I have to rev the engine up to about 4500 rpm just to get it into second. And if I try to shift quickly from second to third or third to fourth, it grinds, even with my foot all the way to the floor on the clutch. Any thoughts??
