OD questions--when to use it? 200

Hi all, I recently bought a 1989 245DL with OD that works! The car is an automatic, and to my understanding the upward orange arrow indicates that the OD is off and when the arrow is gone, the OD is on. I think the manual says that the OD is automatically engaged everytime the car is started. Does that mean I can just drive the car with OD on upon start up? In other words, can I pretty much leave the OD engaged at all times and at all speeds? I have been trying to make it a habit to turn off the OD (orange arrow lighted) when I start the car and drive it from a standstill. I then engage the OD (orange arrow unlighted) upon reaching 45mph. Now, what is the normal and the most mechanically SAFEST speed in which I can engage OD? Disengage OD? Thanks.
