two easy questions 200 1981

I recently purchased an 81 240DL. This weekend I discovered that when the transmission is in Park the car still rolls backward. It won't go forward while in Park. In addition the transmission will "clunk" occasionally while being shifted between Park, Neutral, Reverse and Drive. I remember reading something about the above being normal. Any ideas?
The last question is about changing steering rack boots. I know that my Volvo has the ZF rack. Is it possible to just unbolt the tie rod end from the steering knuckle and slip the new boot onto the tie rod without seperating it?
Thanks for the input.
Ben
