Does a missing a/c belt have any connection to hard steering on 88 740gle's?

Hello Volvo folks!

Does anyone know whether or not a missing a/c belts would affect the power steering pump on a 88 740GLE Wagon (A.T.) w/o turbo? My car is now missing its a/c belt, and my power steering is hard to steer, but when i turn the wheel from left to right i can sort of hear the pump trying to engage along with the belt. One other question, where specifically is the power steering pump located on these vehicles, and again does the a/c work in conjuction with the power steering, confused please help! (P/S FLUID OK) Also is the a/c belt installation a lengthy process? All suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Best Regards.

88 740 GLE wagon A.T. 172,000 miles.
